Apple iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to Feature USB-C and Periscope Zoom

The most significant update to the lineup since perhaps the first Pro Max in 2019 is the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. The iPhone now features USB-C, which has been a long-awaited major update. Goodbye, Lightning, and welcome, cross-platform cords!

The USB 3.0 for professionals has a top speed of 10 Gbps. The iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, or Galaxy charger and cord may be used to charge the latest iPhones. However, Apple made no mention of speedier charging.

Apple made a lot of improvements to the iPhone 15 Pro series’ design. The narrowest bezels ever on an iPhone are on the new Pros, which also feature curved corners. Despite maintaining the exact display sizes as last year, Apple reduced the phones’ total size.

The frames are made of titanium instead of stainless steel, making these the lightest Pro models Apple has ever released. Although there is just a 1g difference between the new models and the 14 Pros from last year, there is a 19g reduction.

According to the business, the rover on Mars also uses grade 5 titanium, the precise alloy in question. Apple has used a novel thermomechanical method to encapsulate aluminum in the titanium substructure. The aluminum’s encasement aids thermal dissipation.

After a 14-hour procedure that involved cutting, sanding, brushing, and eventually blasting the titanium exterior of the phone, the frames of the phone had a brushed texture. There are four color options for the iPhone 15 Pro: Black and White, Blue, and natural Titanium.

Apple equips the iPhone 15 Pros with USB-C, while the Pro Max introduces periscope zoom.

An action button has replaced the mute switch. You may designate one of a set of actions to press or double press to fast launch the camera on an iPhone.

Like the 14 Pro versions, the new iPhone 15 Pros’ front is made of Ceramic Shield glass. The iPhone 15 Pro’s 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display retains its previous size and has an adaptive 120Hz (ProMotion) refresh rate, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits. The dimension is increased to 6.7 inches by the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Stand-by, a landscape always-on mode for charging, has been added to the always-on display feature set.

The new iPhone 15 Pro has a whole new camera setup. The 48MP primary camera, which boasts a larger sensor, 1.22 m pre-binned pixels, and second-generation sensor-shift stabilization, is where it all begins. It has a 24mm f/1.78 lens.

The iPhone 15 Pros’ primary camera has a few image options. Along with 48MP ProRAW photos, 48MP HEIF images may now be captured. With the new, larger sensor, you can also use digital zoom in 28mm and 35mm focal lengths, and the iPhone will let you designate one of these focal lengths as your default.

The first periscope camera for an iPhone debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Thanks to the foldable optical construction, the Pro Max can now zoom over 3x and up to 5x, or 120mm in 35mm equivalent terms. The optical layout is distinctive. It reflects light four times from the pupil opening of the lens to the foldable sensor, and Apple refers to it as a tetraprism. The lens is an f/2.8, the brightest on a phone’s 120mm camera, which is admittedly fairly particular. Additionally, optical stabilization reduces blur, according to Apple, by making 10,000 tiny changes per second.

The iPhone 15 Pro gets by with a mediocre 77mm, 3x zoom camera with 1 megapixel and an f/2.8 lens, similar to the one from a year ago.

A new 13mm f/2.2 1.4-m ultrawide lens with 100% focus pixels and macro focusing capabilities is shared by both versions.

The A17 Pro processor powers the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It is the first 3nm process-based industrial chip. A 6-core processor with two performance and four efficiency cores, each 10% faster than the A16 Bionic, is housed within.

Apple says the 6-core GPU is 20% quicker than its predecessor at its highest performance. Software-based Ray Tracing on last year’s processor is reportedly four times slower than hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing, which is made possible by the GPU. Apple demonstrated Resident Evil Village and Assassin’s Creed Mirage, two console games available on the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models starting in 2019.

The 16-core Neural Engine, according to Apple, is twice as fast as the processor for machine learning models from the previous year.

A specialized AV1 codec and a ProRes codec are included in the Display Engine of the A17 Pro SoC. The chip supports the industry-standard ACES color profile, enabling the new iPhone 15 Pro models to shoot 4k 60fps in ProRes RAW.

This Friday is the pre-order deadline for the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. The basic model of the 15 Pro costs $999 and has 128 GB of onboard storage, while the base model of the 15 Pro Max costs $1,199 and has 256 GB of onboard storage. The Pro and Pro Max are still priced at €1,199 and €1,449, respectively, in Europe, as they were last year. The first shipments of both variants will begin on Friday, September 22.
